Fondazione Teatro Donizetti

The Fondazione manages and brings to life three venues deeply rooted in Bergamo’s cultural history: Teatro Donizetti, the city’s main theatre and a landmark of Bergamo’s performing arts tradition; Teatro Sociale, a jewel of Neoclassical architecture in the heart of Città Alta, Bergamo’s historic Upper Town; and the Birthplace of Gaetano Donizetti, where the great Bergamo-born composer was born in 1797 and which today is dedicated to preserving his memory and bringing his life and work to new audiences.

Throughout the year, the Fondazione presents a rich programme of theatre seasons, festivals and cultural events.

La Stagione dei Teatri brings together Prosa, Altri Percorsi, Operette and Opera&Concerti, making it one of the highlights of Bergamo’s cultural calendar. Alongside it are the Fondazione’s two major festivals: Donizetti Opera, the international festival dedicated to Gaetano Donizetti, and Bergamo Jazz, one of Italy’s most prestigious jazz festivals. The programme is further enriched by other series and initiatives, including Lezioni di Storia, Il Centro della Musica and a variety of guest events.

Alongside its artistic programme, the Fondazione develops educational, training and engagement projects for schools, young people, families and the wider community. These initiatives aim to foster a deeper appreciation of the performing arts and create new opportunities for artists, audiences and the local community to meet, connect and engage with one another.

Through its theatres, festivals, cultural programmes and the places that preserve the legacy of Gaetano Donizetti, the Fondazione contributes to a cultural landscape where tradition meets contemporary creativity, heritage meets artistic production, and a strong local identity embraces an international outlook.
