Teatro Sociale di Como
Teatro Sociale di Como, one of the oldest and most atmospheric theatres in Northern Italy, was inaugurated in 1813, the year in which Richard Wagner and Giuseppe Verdi were born.
Since 2001 it has been the home of the Associazione Lirica e Concertistica Italiana (AsLiCo) (Italian Lyric and Concert Association), which is responsible for the theatre’s entire artistic programme: opera, drama, music, dance, shows and events for all tastes and all ages. Particular attention is given to music education through the Opera Education projects. In summer, the theatre moves outdoors, to the Arena del Teatro, with the Festival “Como Città della Musica” (“Como City of Music”).
Teatro Sociale di Como – AsLiCo is an opera house dating back to 1813, but its activities extend far beyond opera.
The Theatre is…
- night, with an intense and lively season, from modern dance to theatre, from spoken theatre to musicals, from the concert season to major international shows.
- day, dedicated to performances for schools and families, but also to theatre and dance courses and the children’s choir.
- education, an innovative platform that brings together the educational projects aimed at children and young people, who take an active part in the theatrical performance they join after a structured program at school. One opera title and one theme, adapted for every age group, from 0 to 99 years old.
- 200.Com, a theatre rooted in the local area and belonging to the community, to which an ambitious project is dedicated, created to celebrate the Theatre’s bicentenary. Every Monday from September to June, more than 200 choristers come together to sing in the choir or play in the orchestra, to sew a skirt or paint a piece of scenery. The workshops bring together amateurs and professionals, teachers and students, culminating in the opening production of the summer Festival.
- festival, a cross-disciplinary program that explores music in all its forms, from opera to pop music, from classical ballet to symphonic and electronic music, taking over the whole city: from the Arena del Teatro to Villa Olmo, through cloisters and courtyards, towers and hidden gardens, from dawn until the small hours…
- agora, a place for reflection and encounter, to address social, cultural and political issues, to express and listen to words and ideas, so that creative and scientific excellence can emerge. To engage and collaborate with the city’s associations, from fine arts to cinema, from music to the sciences.
- inclusive and accessible, to promote music and opera with particular attention to new languages, new talents and new audiences, in an ever more inclusive spirit, working to remove barriers and promote accessible solutions, so that audiences in all their diversity can approach theatre and opera. All this through audio description, multisensory tours, accessible background materials, Italian Sign Language (LIS) interpreting, assisted listening thanks to Sennheiser’s new Mobile Connect system, the use of AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication)…
- a theatre by and for everyone, in dialogue with local associations and organisations, listening and open to new ideas and stimuli, experimenting and discovering together with them solutions that adapt to different needs.
- beyond the theatre, to meet people in the street, to surprise them among the shopping trolleys, singing an aria among the trees or leaning out from a balcony.
Every day the theatre wakes up and goes to sleep, but only for a few hours…

2026–2027 Season: VOLT. There is no progress without curiosity
The 2026–27 season, VOLT. There is no progress without curiosity, will be dedicated to SCIENCE, marking the important bicentenary of Alessandro Volta’s death, it is promoted in collaboration with the Società dei Palchettisti and the Municipality of Como, with the support of the Regione Lombardia, Ministero della Cultura e Fondazione Cariplo, and under the patronage of the Volta200 Local Governance and the National Committee for the Celebration of the Bicentenary of the Death of Alessandro Volta.
The VOLT season follows a journey that began with Humanity (2024-25 Season), dedicated to the human race, and continued with Fairplay (2025-26), focused on the relationship between theatre and sport on the occasion of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, which explored different ways of interpreting the contemporary world.
VOLT is the third chapter of this trilogy and turns its gaze to science, seen not as a specialist field separate from everyday life, but as an essential component of culture.
If science investigates the phenomena that have made civilisation what it is, theatre reconstructs their human journeys: the insights, the mistakes, the ambitions, the conflicts, the consequences.
There is no progress without curiosity: curiosity is where science and theatre truly meet.
A special day will be VOLTA DAY, on Sunday 22 November, an entire day dedicated to science, in collaboration with various local organisations. The auditorium will be transformed into a ‘citadel of science’, with the seating removed to make room for free activities throughout the theatre.. From the stalls to the foyer to the boxes, all spaces will be devoted to science-related activities. Workshops for children, games, treasure hunts and escape rooms for young people, in-depth talks, screenings… everything will be about getting to know, approaching and exploring the scientific method founded by Alessandro Volta. As a theatre by and for everyone, Teatro Sociale seeks to build relationships and foster dialogue with local organisations and community groups.
The aim is to make the theatre not only a place of performance, but a space where different disciplines, skills and audiences meet. VOLT is a project built as a network. Fondazione Alessandro Volta, Festival della Luce, Università dell’Insubria, ComoNExT Innovation Hub, cultural associations, youth organisations and businesses are all taking part in building the season.
But it won’t be only about science. The 2026/27 Season will run from September 2026 to May 2027, with a program of numerous shows, from operas to ballets, from classical concerts to jazz, as well as classical drama.
The programme also includes experimental theatre, comedy, musicals, performances for children, talks and presentations.
All in all, a decidedly eclectic year that nods to prestigious productions that will make audiences dream, think, laugh and cry, enriching spectators with new emotions.
