Ambrosius. Il tesoro della Basilica

Referring to it as a ‘Treasure’ rather than a ‘museum’ means placing at the centre not only the artworks, but a living heritage, preserved at the heart of one of the greatest masterpieces of Lombard Romanesque architecture, closely linked to the figure of Saint Ambrose and the history of the city. The Basilica, with its monumental structure and long historical layers, is in fact one of Milan’s most iconic landmarks.

The tour showcases this extraordinary complex through the Aula Ambrosii, the chapel of San Vittore in Ciel d’Oro and the Capitolino, spaces that recount centuries of devotion, art and monastic life. Among the masterpieces encountered along the route, the mosaic depicting Saint Ambrose in the chapel of San Vittore in Ciel d’Oro, the Altar of Gold – an extraordinary Carolingian reliquary – and Saint Ambrose’s bed, housed in the Aula Ambrosii alongside the bowl attributed to the saint, stand out. The exhibition thus offers visitors the chance to engage with works and artefacts that combine artistic value, devotional significance and Milanese identity.

Alongside the exhibition, Ambrosius features an area dedicated to visitor reception and educational activities, with a multimedia room, educational programmes, workshops and small monastic vegetable gardens inspired by medieval tradition.

The experience is designed for a wide and international audience, featuring guided tours, themed itineraries and activities for adults, families and schools, in harmony with the city and Milan’s rich cultural offering.
