Piazza della Scala is the striking location of the architectural complex consisting of Palazzo Beltrami - formerly the headquarters of Banca Commerciale Italiana -, Palazzo Anguissola Antona Traversi and Palazzo Brentani, home of the art collections of Gallerie d'Italia in Milan. Symbols of the history of Milan, these buildings were designed by leading Italian architects between the late 1700s and the early 20th century. The museum houses the “Alessandro’s Garden” - located between Casa del Manzoni and Palazzo Anguissola Antona Traversi - which has been open to the public since October 2015.
Gallerie d’Italia - Milano, together with the sites in Naples, Turin and Vicenza, makes up the Intesa Sanpaolo museum and culture complex. The Bank’s historic buildings, located in the centre of the four cities, have been transformed into exhibition venues to welcome and share the Group’s art collections with the public. Palazzo Anguissola Antona Traversi with Palazzo Brentani house 19th century works belonging to Fondazione Cariplo and Intesa Sanpaolo in the From Canova to Boccioni exhibition. The historic headquarters of Banca Commerciale Italiana, located in Piazza della Scala and designed by Luca Beltrami between 1906 and 1911, are home to a selection of 20th century works from the Intesa Sanpaolo collection, presented on a rotation basis with themed displays held cyclically, as part of the Cantiere del ’900 exhibition, dedicated to enhancement Intesa Sanpaolo’s collection of 20th- and 21st-century artworks, which includes pieces by Fontana, Burri, Vedova, Afro, Dorazio, and Capogrossi among others. The spaces are complemented by the Vault on the underground level -formerly used to house safe-deposit boxes and now serving as additional exhibition space - which can be visited via guided tours by appointment and features around 500 artworks from the Intesa Sanpaolo collections.
