Fondazione Stelline

Fondazione Stelline is one of Milan’s leading cultural institutions. Established in 1986 at the initiative of the Lombardy Region and the City of Milan, for over thirty years it has fostered dialogue, promoted the dissemination of culture, and encouraged debate on issues of civic, social, economic and international significance.

Its historic headquarters are located in Palazzo delle Stelline, on Corso Magenta, in the heart of Milan’s historic and artistic heritage. The building stands on the site of the historic “Orti di Leonardo”, where the vineyard that Ludovico il Moro gave to Leonardo da Vinci was once located, directly opposite the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie, home to Leonardo’s iconic Last Supper.

Over the years, the Foundation has established itself as a forum for dialogue and exchange among institutions, businesses, academia and civil society, promoting multidisciplinary initiatives with a focus both on Milan and Lombardy and on the international context.

The Foundation has also played a prominent role in the field of contemporary art. Fondazione Stelline has organised more than three hundred exhibitions, making a significant contribution to the promotion and appreciation of contemporary artistic research. Its exhibition spaces have hosted major projects devoted to some of the most influential figures on the international art scene, bringing together established masters, emerging talents and in-depth explorations of contemporary artistic practices and languages.

Palazzo delle Stelline, a building of historic, artistic and architectural significance, is currently undergoing a major restoration and redevelopment project. The project includes the restoration of its historic spaces, sustainability and energy-efficiency improvements, and the creation of new areas dedicated to culture, exhibitions and public amenities, including a café, restaurant and bookshop. Once the works are completed, the venue will offer an even richer, more accessible and engaging experience for visitors.

During this period of transformation, the Foundation continues its activities through FuoriStelline, a city-wide programme bringing events, talks, educational activities and cultural projects to different venues across Milan. The initiative ensures continuity for the Foundation’s key programmes, including DN Direzione Nord, its long-standing platform for dialogue among institutions, businesses and civil society, as well as STELLINE ARTOUR, an extensive programme of educational initiatives across the city. In this way, the Foundation continues to play a leading role in Milan’s cultural life, extending its activities beyond the walls of Palazzo delle Stelline.

Today, Fondazione Stelline continues to be a key cultural reference point for Milan: a place where history, heritage, contemporary art and innovation converge, offering citizens and visitors a dynamic cultural experience that is open to dialogue and deeply international in outlook.
