Piccolo Teatro di Milano – Teatro d’Europa

An Art Theatre for Everyone

In the heart of Milan stands the Piccolo Teatro di Milano – Teatro d’Europa, the first public theatre in Italy. It opened on 14 May 1947, when the city, just emerging from the devastation of war, was in search of new spaces for culture and rebirth. This adventure was brought to life by three great personalities: director Giorgio Strehler, organizer Paolo Grassi, and Nina Vinchi, who passionately shaped its administration.

Three venues, three souls: the Piccolo Teatro welcomes its spectators at its historic Teatro Grassi venue (Via Rovello, 2), at the Teatro Studio Melato (Via Rivoli, 6), inaugurated in 1986, and at the Teatro Strehler (Largo Greppi, 1), opened in 1998. Next to Teatro Grassi is lies the enchanting Chiostro Nina Vinchi, restored to its original splendour in 2009. The Chiostro hosts presentations, talks and cultural activities and it is also home to the Piccolo Café & Restaurant.

From the very beginning, the Piccolo was much more than a theatre: it was a place of gathering and community, faithful to its motto “An Art Theatre for Everyone”. In almost eighty years of activity, it has produced more than 470 plays, ranging from the great classics of European theatre to new dramaturgy, with productions that have made history on the world stage.

Today, the Piccolo Teatro continues to strengthen its European vocation, developing new networks and joint projects with major theatres worldwide. For anyone visiting Milan, the Piccolo is an unmissable destination – not only to attend a play but also to discover a permanent cultural laboratory, combine training, research, memory, and innovation, with its gaze always fixed on the future.
