Heading to Bergamo: between innovation and the Middle Ages

Kilometro Rosso
Positioned at the gates of Bergamo along the A4 highway, Kilometro Rosso is a state-of-the-art science and technology park designed by world-renowned architect Jean Nouvel. The complex immediately stands out for its iconic, bright red aluminum wall stretching exactly one kilometer, creating a striking visual contrast against the lush green campus. As one of Europe's leading research and development districts, it plays host to global corporations, universities, and centers of excellence. While it remains a fully operational, 24/7 working facility, it is well worth a stop even from the outside to admire a masterclass in contemporary architecture that embodies the region’s forward-thinking, industrial spirit.

Donizetti's Birthplace
Nestled in the heart of the picturesque Borgo Canale district, just outside the city’s original medieval walls, lies the Birthplace of Gaetano Donizetti. This modest 15th-century residence is where the celebrated composer was born in 1797, spending his early years in its humble subterranean rooms. Today, the exhibition path houses historic documents, period musical instruments, and personal keepsakes that trace the artist’s childhood and the early stages of his legendary operatic career. When planning your visit, keep in mind that the site is currently open to the public exclusively on Sundays.

Città Alta (Upper Town)
Città Alta is Bergamo’s historic hilltop core, fully encircled by the formidable Venetian Walls, a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wandering through its cobblestone alleys, ancient squares, and historic artisan workshops offers an instant sensation of stepping back in time. The fortified perimeter stretches for over five kilometers, providing an extraordinary panoramic promenade with sweeping views across the Lombard plains below.

Piazza Vecchia
Wandering further into the center of the Upper Town brings you to Piazza Vecchia, an architectural treasure famously praised by Le Corbusier as one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. At its center stands the picturesque Contarini Fountain, gifted to the city in 1780 and adorned with marble sphinxes and lions. The square is framed by historic civic buildings, including Palazzo della Ragione, one of Italy's oldest municipal halls, and the majestic Civic Tower, affectionately known as the Campanone, whose summit delivers 360-degree views over the entire skyline.

Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore
Passing beneath the vaulted porticoes of Palazzo della Ragione reveals the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. Its austere Romanesque exterior, guarded by famous stone lions, conceals an interior of breathtaking grandeur. The sanctuary unfolds as a gilded masterpiece of intricate stuccoes, vivid frescoes, and priceless Florentine and Flemish tapestries. The basilica also completes the city's musical narrative, serving as the final resting place for Gaetano Donizetti beneath a monumental marble memorial.

Cappella Colleoni
Adjoining the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore stands the Cappella Colleoni, widely regarded as the crowning jewel of the Renaissance in Bergamo. Its spectacular facade features an intricate inlay of red, white, and black marble, creating a striking contrast against the neighboring stone architecture. Commissioned as a private mausoleum by the legendary military commander Bartolomeo Colleoni, the chapel houses masterwork frescoes by Tiepolo, a gilded equestrian statue of the captain, and the delicate tomb of his young daughter, Medea. The chapel welcomes visitors daily except Mondays.
