Piccolo Teatro di Milano – Teatro d’Europa

A tormented prince seeking revenge for the murder of his father, a character that, over the centuries, has grown to become an icon of theatre itself. Starring Mario Pirrello, Leonardo Lidi’s courageous and original take on the extraordinary tragedy by William Shakespeare: «Mine will be a divisive play. That is my intention. Hamlet should not be easy.»

There is no greater challenge that that of either performing or directing the story of the prince of Elsinore and bearing the weight of the questions it raises and, above all, all the possible answers. It is now the turn of Leonardo Lidi who, through a bold and seductive reading, takes on the questions raised by Hamlet: “I am not looking for the prince that we are all used to imagining, nor the suffering as it is supposed to appear. This is an eternal paradox of theatre: the more its fiction is declared, the closer it comes to the truth. The play does not pretend to show the truth: its aim is to accompany the spectators to a point in which they realise that the truth lies not on stage, but in the resonance that the stage creates”.
