In a world dominated by a bitter and ruthless fight for survival, a marten sets off on a journey of awareness. Based on the debut novel by Bernardo Zannoni, winner of the Campiello Award, VicoQuartoMazzini stages the dark tale of an animal that has the stupid idea of trying to be more than it is.
A young marten is left lame while trying to steal three robin eggs. No longer of use to his mother, he is sold for the paltry price of one and a half chickens. The buyer is an old fox, a usurer, who decides to reveal his greatest secret: a sacred book, the word of God. Through the revelation of language, the marten discovers the concept of time and its paradoxes: the insidious and consolatory nature of memory, and the liberation and abyss of death. The power of reading and writing thus becomes both cause and remedy, salve and wound, levity and oppression.
In the wake of La ferocia – winner of four Ubu awards including Best Show 2024 – the company VicoQuartoMazzini continues its exploration of contemporary Italian literature, venturing into a world populated by animals who first seek out and then reject God, who dream they are human to then prefer remaining beasts.
“And what is our stupid intention as directors?” ask Michele Altamura and Gabriele Paolocà. “To tell stories on stage to evoke ideas that are greater than us, or to try and halt time through creativity, in the hope of becoming, in turn, memory? We accept the responsibility of bringing these questions to the stage, to understand whether theatre can provide us with answers or whether, instead, this is just another stupid intention”.
