«There is no blame without intent»: directed by Paolo Valerio, Franco Branciaroli plays Romeo Daddi, a man crushed by remorse over something he did without apparent reason, in Luigi Pirandello’s last play. A ruthless investigation in which the search for knowledge leads to destruction rather than liberation.
Count Romeo Daddi – here played by Franco Branciaroli – is a respectable and apparently even-tempered man. However, his soul is tormented by a sense of guilt: during a moment of confusion and unexpected attraction, he betrayed both his consort and his friend Giorgio Vanzi with Ginevra, the latter’s wife. It all happened who knows how, almost as though a dark and uncontrollable force had overtaken him.
“This is a work that dismantles the very concept of identity, presenting the progressive and relentless destruction of affection”, comments the director Paolo Valerio. “Pirandello anticipates and profoundly relates to Freudian psychoanalysis, presenting individuals possessed by obscure desire, by an alternative dimension that floods the conscious without warning”.
