Gabriele Lavia and Federica Di Martino are the protagonists in the screenplay by Ingmar Bergman, the story of the personal failure of a hugely successful artist. An essential and extremely powerful work, where words are confessions and theatre is once more shown to be a reflection of existence.
At the end of rehearsals for the staging of A Dream Play by August Strindberg, a director finds himself alone with an actress. This encounter lies at the heart of After the rehearsal, one of Ingmar Bergman’s most intimate and moving works – on which a film was based – here performed by Gabriele Lavia and Federica Di Martino. Memories, confessions and silences reveal the weight of the past, the desire, the regret and the reciprocal dependency of creator and performer. The stage thus becomes a mental space, inhabited by the ghosts of the past, unresolved relationships and artistic obsession. In this suspended realm, the theatre is not only a place of representation, but also a vital need, refuge and – at the same time – condemnation.
