Geppy Gleijeses performs – alongside Pino Micol – and directs this “black comedy” by Eduardo: «Symbolical, political and almost didactic, but that in my opinion demands to be taken head on, plunging one’s hands into the evil, the suffering and, at times, the blood. Yet this is a comedy, not a tragedy, and features some of the author’s best ever lines.»
“In 1973, Eduardo staged Il sindaco del rione Sanità at the San Ferdinando. I was 19, and I saw the play 12 times”, says Geppy Gleijeses. “Incredibly, during the play’s run, I was invited by Eduardo’s doctor to his home to meet the maestro. That encounter changed my life: I gained his respect, he called on me, and granted me rights to perform his work, and I have performed seven of his plays over the course of my 50-year theatrical career. Thus, at the age of 72, a year younger than Eduardo was at the time, my dream of playing The Mayor is finally coming true”. Written in 1960, the comedy tells of the ambiguous and charismatic power of Antonio Barracano, a respectable yet feared man who administers justice according to his own personal rules, in a society in which the State appears unable to guarantee fairness and dignity.
