La pazzia di Re Giorgio

Piccolo Teatro di Milano – Teatro d’Europa

England at the end of the Eighteenth century. George III, the reigning monarch, has completely lost his mind. What can be done to make sure that the kingdom is unaffected by the situation? Heading a cast of around two dozen actors, Massimo Popolizio directs and performs in La pazzia di Re Giorgio by Alan Bennett.

The Madness of George III examines an extremely topical theme, that of illness and power: the work poses profound questions on the consequences of a political leader in a commanding position losing control of their mental capacities. Another theme is that of information management: the plot is enriched by events within the court and the way in which the government manipulates information on the king’s health in order to maintain control. This comedy is a touching exploration of the king’s humanity. Bennett strips George III of his regality, presenting a frightened and humiliated man locked in a battle against himself. He invites us to reflect on the fragility that lies under the surface of every figure of power, rendering the character and his suffering universal.
