Can one ask to be forgiven for an irreparable act? Can one forgive the killer of their child? Massimiliano Civica – four-time winner of the Ubu award for best director - comes to the Piccolo with his latest work, inspired by a film by Ernst Lubitsch.
During the Great War, Henri, a young French soldier, kills Peter, a German of the same age. On his return to Paris, the young man goes to the Cathedral of Notre-Dame to ask for absolution for the homicide. The priest, having heard his confession, blesses him, telling him he has committed no crime to be pardoned; he simply did his
duty as a soldier. “I came here to find peace. And you have not given it to me”, answers Henri, deciding then to go to Germany and ask Peter’s parents for forgiveness...
Inspired by the film Broken Lullaby (1932) by Ernst Lubitsch, the play is the latest work by Massimiliano Civica, the four-time winner of the Ubu Award for best director.
