Riccardo Frati turns to Alessandro Baricco for his new production at the Piccolo. A tribute to the need to be human in order to believe in dreams and to fight to realise them, a story of love, passion, plans and visionary utopias, in a community of interwoven destinies that constantly walks the line between brilliance and failure.
Castelli di rabbia, based on the successful novel by Alessandro Baricco, is the third chapter, following Il piccolo Principe and Il barone rampante, of which Riccardo Frati defines as his personal coming-of-age trilogy. Read in his early twenties, the book was, for Frati, “the discovery of a writer and his prose, lyrical yet imaginative, capable of creating original characters described with such accuracy as to seem to have a life of their own”. In the story of Dann Rail, the man “who imagines so many things that a lifetime is not enough to contain them all”, of his wife Jun, a woman who hides a secret, of Pekish, “who, every Friday, plays the humanophone”, of Pehnt and Hector Horeau and all the other inhabitants of Quinnipak, Frati sees “an eulogy to utopia and the right to fail, a message that is more meaningful than ever, in this era of constant pressure, above all on the younger generations,
to ‘excel’ at every stage of life. It is an invitation to believe in one’s dreams and to experience the drive for self-realisation with love, passion and generosity. It is a tribute to the redeeming power of reading, through which to hold tight to the written word ‘in order to not be seduced and ruined by the relentless passage of life’. It is the bitter realisation that imagination triumphs over life”.
