Finland 1940-1941. Fleeing from a Germany in flames and determined to extract from the foulness of Hitler’s war the “natural” laws of exploitation, Brecht – a convinced believer of the adage that “tragedy, much more often that comedy, makes light of human suffering” – in telling the crimes and misdemeanours of the chauffeur Matti and his master Puntila, paints, in the guise of an exhilarating vaudeville show of “misunderstandings”, a bitter and disenchanted indictment of the dangers of social democracy, imitating the at times naive, at times horrific, at times licentious nature of popular Nordic tales. And now? Drawing on the ruthless game of “master/servant” devised by the “poor B.B.”, Franco Branciaroli, Lino Guanciale and Claudio Longhi, more than twenty years on from their previous theatrical encounter, stage an exotic and epic “experiment” on the transformable nature of the world, with wonderful sylvan views and sprawling urban jungles.
