In the first show to form part of the joint project Atlante delle Rive, Marco Paolini tells how the management of water resources has, over the centuries, run parallel to political and social changes, and to the evolution of society and relationships. Now, more than ever, in the era of climate change, we need to understand that water is a common asset to be safeguarded.
Bestiario idrico speaks of rivers and beasts of all kinds, telling stories of the biological and social life that rotates around the rivers. It tells of the conflicts and contracts that, around the waters of the rivers, have lent form to the landscape that we now recognise as ours. It highlights the close bond between the forms of water governance and the quality of life on the rivers, not only of one species but for the entire ecosystem.
The Italian landscape is artificial, but the network of water works defies definition. Is a bridge part of a road or a water network? How different would the agricultural landscape be without the circulation of irrigation water and without canals and pumps to remove excess rain?
